Study to show yourself approved....loose paraphrase from 2 Timothy
.
I have seen this portion of this verse numerous times now and i wonder if those quoting it have stopped to examine it.......if you have 'studied to show yourself approved' that is most excellent! God Bless you greatly! However, I see many using that verse as a claim to be 'approved' by those around them they are contesting with. Are we pleasing God? man? ourselves?
.
13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve;
Joshua 24
.
14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve;
Joshua 24
.
If we have Truly 'studied to show ourself approved' it will be clearly seen through the "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, and temperance" contained in our conversation and we would not need to use it to identify ourself as someone 'knowledgable in the Word', it would be easily seen and understood.
.
Matt 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
.
1 Cor 12:31b... and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. 1 Cor 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: (charity translates as LOVE)
.
If "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, and temperance" are not present in our words toward one another, perhaps we need to study longer, to 'show ourselves approved'. The only 'approval' we should be striving for comes from God and is displayed for all to see by the Fruit we produce for Him.
.
5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. (2 Cor 3)
.
44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. (Luke 6)
.
4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
